What is Somatic Psychotherapy?
Body-Based Depression Therapy

Somatic Psychotherapy is a form of nervous system regulation therapy which deals with body based trauma. In reality, the body remembers trauma on a cellular level. With Somatic Therapy, you discover the root of your trauma through body-based exercises.

Understanding trauma responses, sensations, breath, and shutdown patterns. Then, through actively working on these patterns, you heal. This is called Somatic Psychotherapy.

Mind meets Body

Feeling Numb is Not the Problem,
But Not Healing is!

Trauma is the root cause of how you shape yourself. If not treated right, it can convert into Bipolar Disorder, High-Functioning Depression, OCD, PTSD, etc. Here’s an overlook of what unhealed trauma can become:

PTSD

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a condition where you’d feel uneasy, under chronic stress, and very scared due to a traumatic event. Most common in War veterans, sexual assault victims, and abusive parenthood, PTSD feels like being in a migraine all the time. Therapy for PTSD is not an easy step, but it’s the only thing that can help you get back.

Bipolar Disorder

Formerly known as Manic Depression or Hypermania, it is a mental condition which messes with your brain with cyclical mood swings, activity levels, and you may feel difficulty in concentration.

OCD

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, OCD, is a mental condition which comes with uncontrollable thoughts, overthinking, and obsessive repetitive behaviours. The most common example is to be obsessively hygienic.

High-Functioning

This is a form of depression which goes unnoticed 99% of the time. It’s silent, you feel numb emotionally, and it's exhausting.

Emotional Expression Via Body—
What Somatic Therapy Involves?

Emotional expression is more than just talking about it. Our mind expresses more through body. This is exactly what Somatic Psychotherapy taps into. Here’s exactly what somatic trauma therapy taps into:

Breathing Work

Breathing is the fastest bridge between the mind and the nervous system. Through guided breathing practices, we gently slow down stress responses, release stored tension, and bring the body back into safety. Breathwork supports emotional regulation, grounding, and awareness without needing words or analysis.

Movement & Dance

The body holds emotions long after the mind moves on. Movement and dance allow suppressed feelings to surface naturally through rhythm, flow, and expression. By engaging the body in intentional motion, we support emotional release, restore vitality, and rebuild a sense of freedom and connection.

Touch & Sensation Release

Trauma often lives in the body as tightness, numbness, or discomfort. Through safe, consent-based awareness of touch and physical sensations, we help the nervous system discharge stored stress. This process encourages relaxation, presence, and a deeper sense of safety within the body.

Hakomi

Hakomi is a mindful, body-centered approach that gently uncovers unconscious beliefs stored in the body. Using present-moment awareness and somatic cues, it helps reveal emotional patterns with compassion and curiosity. The process supports deep self-understanding, emotional integration, and lasting inner change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Somatic psychotherapy is a holistic approach that integrates the mind, body, and spirit to treat emotional and trauma-based issues. It recognizes that trauma is held in the body, using physical techniques like breathwork and movement alongside traditional talk therapy to release it.
Yes. Depression often comes with physical symptoms like fatigue, numbness, and heaviness. Somatic therapy targets these physical manifestations, helping to re-engage the nervous system and release the trapped energy that contributes to depressive states.
Absolutely. Somatic therapy is highly effective for PTSD because trauma profoundly impacts the nervous system. By gently working with the body's sensations, we help you process trauma without having to verbally relive the traumatic event, which can be re-traumatizing.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is "top-down," focusing primarily on changing conscious thoughts to alter behavior. Somatic therapy is "bottom-up," focusing first on the body's physical sensations and nervous system regulation to create emotional and cognitive shifts.
Healing is a highly individualized journey. It depends on the depth and complexity of your trauma. We focus on long-term transformation rather than quick fixes, meaning we work at a pace that is safe, sustainable, and effective for your unique nervous system.
Yes. Trauma bonding involves deep, subconscious physiological attachments. Somatic therapy helps you recognize the physical cues of these bonds, regulate the anxiety of detachment, and build a profound sense of inner safety outside of the toxic dynamic.
A combination of Psychodynamic therapy (to understand deeply rooted subconscious patterns from childhood) and Somatic therapy (to regulate the nervous system during conflict) is often the most profound approach for creating lasting relationship changes.
Yes, we offer highly effective, fully secure online telehealth therapy to residents anywhere within California, ensuring accessible care alongside our physical location.
